The History of Nuwara-Eliya local council.

The Development Council Act No. 35 of 1980 established the Anuwa District Development Council system. Due to the development council system that was in place since 1981, the then existing SUE Municipal Councils and Village Councils were abolished. The powers and functions, assets and liabilities of those institutions were also assigned to the Development Councils. Those nine village councils and Sue Municipal Council offices located in the region became the auxiliary offices of the Development Council. It was controlled under the district secretary of Kotagala, Kadapola and Nanuoy. Then 258 Regional Councils were established under the Regional Council Act No. 15 of 1987. Nuwara Eliya Regional Council was also included among them.

Mr. V. Radhakrishnan was elected in the local government election held in accordance with the Local Council Act No. 15 of 1987 and governed from April 1991 to March 1997. Mr. TV Marimuthu, who was elected as the chairman in the 1997 election, ruled from April 25, 1997 to January 27, 2000 and his term ended in the year 2000 based on a party decision.

From 27th January to 27th February 2002, Mr. MP Dayawamsa ruled as Acting Chairman. In the next election held, the Honorable Marynal Rose was appointed as the President and ruled from 27th April 2002 to October 2002. She was later removed based on a party decision and from November 2002, Honorable AP Shaktivel ruled the Nuwara Eliya Regional Council as the President.

From 17.04.2006 to 31.12.2010 it was ruled by Honorable AS Sudagar who was appointed as the Chairman of Nuwara Eliya Regional Council. From 01.01.2011 to 31.03.2011 Mr. Nuwara Eliya Regional Secretary acted as authorized officer. In the local government election held in 2011, Mr. N. Sadasivan became the chairman of the Nuwara Eliya Regional Council and served as chairman from 01.01.2011 to 15.05.2015. From 16.05.2015 to 20.03.2018, Mr. P. Pradeep and Mrs. UH Padma, who were the secretaries of the Nuwara Eliya Regional Council, continued to work as authorized officers. Mr. Velu Yogaraj, who was elected in the local government election held on 10th February 2018, was elected as the new chairman and served as the chairman of the local council from 02.04.2018 to 19.03.2023.
